Laser hair removal

Laser hair removal gives long-lasting reduction of unwanted hair by gradually destroying the follicles. It works on most areas of the body, for women and men, and also helps with conditions such as hirsutism and folliculitis.

Anaesthesianot needed
Session time10–60 minutes, depending on the area
Sessionsusually 6–8 or more
Interval4–8 weeks, depending on the area

How it works

The laser emits light at a wavelength absorbed by the pigment in the hair. The energy turns into heat and reaches the follicle, damaging it so that it no longer produces a new hair. Only hairs in the active growth phase respond, which is why several sessions are needed.

The result is a significant, long-lasting reduction in hair. Some finer hairs may grow back over time, and occasional maintenance sessions may be needed.

Who it suits

Laser hair removal works best on dark hair. Very light, blonde, red or white hair responds poorly. Skin and hair type are assessed before the first session, and the settings are adjusted to each person.

It is also useful medically, in hirsutism (excess hair growth in women, sometimes linked to hormonal imbalances that should be investigated), in folliculitis and ingrown hairs after shaving, and for hair in sensitive areas.

How many sessions you need

Usually 6–8 sessions or more, 4–8 weeks apart depending on the area (less often on the body, more often on the face). Between sessions you can shave, but do not wax or pluck.

Preparation and aftercare

  • no sun exposure, sunbeds or self-tanner for 3–4 weeks before and after;
  • shave the area the day before;
  • after the session: mild redness that fades within hours; moisturiser and sun protection.

Contraindications

  • pregnancy;
  • recently tanned skin;
  • photosensitising medication;
  • active herpes or infection in the treatment area;
  • some skin conditions, photosensitive epilepsy and other situations discussed at the consultation.

Risks

Temporary redness and swelling, irritation and, rarely, temporary pigment changes or small superficial burns.

Results vary from one patient to another.

It feels like warmth or a short sting. Most patients tolerate it well without anaesthesia.

Yes, on areas not exposed to the sun, as long as the skin is not tanned. For exposed areas, autumn to spring is ideal.

It reduces hair significantly and for the long term. Occasional maintenance sessions may be needed, especially with hormonal imbalances.
